EXCERPT
As we sped along during what was to be my last night “riding homicide” I began to think about why I found myself in the back of a patrol car at two in the morning. Here I was, a young lawyer, a little less than two years out of law school heading to the location of the third murder I had to be involved in investigating in less than twenty-four hours.
My job title was Assistant D.A. in the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office. After a little more than a year in the office, I had been assigned to the Homicide Investigations Bureau. Supposedly, it was a “prime” position in the office but, at two in the morning in the back of a police car with rain spattering the windows, it didn’t feel like a particularly prime position to be in.
Part of my job was going to the scenes of homicides, taking statements from any witnesses the police had located and meeting with the police to work with them in commencing the investigation into the homicide. This meant working with the specialized squad of detectives assigned to homicide investigations
In the early 1970s I unexpectedly started my legal career as an assistant district attorney in the Brooklyn, New York District Attorney’s Office (Kings County DA). It was a time of such significantly high levels of crime as to make the statistics in New York City today look mild. Due to the nature of the office, the overwhelming amount of criminal activity and the societal customs of the time, my experiences as a prosecutor were often bizarre, grim and occasionally even funny.
The book "It's Only Manslaughter" is a fictionalized account of my experience becoming an assistant DA and working as an assistant DA. The events on which the book are based are true. They are also often tragic. To avoid raising old fears or emotions among those who may have been connected directly or indirectly with any of these events and may still be alive, more than fifty years later, I have changed some of the details of these situations from what actually occurred. I have also altered names, dates, locations and in some cases the age, gender and/or ethnicity of those involved. Nothing in this book is presented for the purpose of upsetting or embarrassing anyone. Rather it is presented to demonstrate the unusual experiences I had a long time ago that, for the most part, cannot be repeated today and in some instances may even appear made up because they are so strange.
HERE ARE A COUPLE OF REVIEWS:
" With the benefit of decades of insight and experience, the author provides a retrospective view of crime, the police and criminal courts procedures, and Brooklyn in the 1970's. Anyone interested in these topics will appreciate the reality, the absurdity and the humanity in these stories."
"Interesting look behind the curtain of the DA’s office in the 70’s - different perspective than typical real life crime stories. Enjoyed Steve’s witty take on many difficult situations. If you enjoy true crime, it’s a must read."
